Happy Day After Christmas! And happy Yuletide! I've made it through the first part of the alphabet, thanks to the pit of lethargy that is my mother's house :) And here are my recs so far:

I commence by recommending stories written about my friends' media endeavors!

First, Salt Stained, which is CHOICE OF BROADSIDES FIC! Of course, it is about falling in love with Villeneuve :) A little sexy, a little dramatic, a lot creative, and it preserves the uncertainty of the original form. It makes me super happy that my friends' stories are successful, and that they're inspiring stories of their own. (Oh, and if you don't know Choice of Games, you should check them out. Choice of Broadsides is only one of many excellent choose-your-own-adventure-type games that they have.)

Ditto for Lizzie Bennet Diaries! There are several LBD fics this year, but I like Charcoal Heart the best. It's a Darcy POV during that disastrous wedding. Especially at the beginning, it feels very true to the LBD-Darcy's character.

Next, we have a story written for a friend of mine. Milk and Honey, for Lindensphinx. (Who I miss! I hope you're doing well, if you're out there reading!) And I hope you like your gift, because it is beautiful. Baldwin the Leper-King is on his deathbed, and receives a visitor. Deeply moving, and unexpectedly funny.

I must confess my disappointment in a few other fandoms that I look forward to reading every year. One of the Study in Emerald fics I didn't even read because of the warnings on it, and the other was only meh. I was also disappointed in Alphas - the one with the Secret Santas wasn't bad, but there is really no way that you can set any story after this year's season ender and not deal with the events of the season ender! And where were all the Dark Towers? Ah well. They can't all be great years!

And now on to some more good things!

Good Intentions (give me all your trouble and cake), Anne of Green Gables. This one, of all of them, had the style of the original down best - children getting into Scrapes, grownups gossiping, all of the small-town talk of people coming from this family or that family.

Erase and Reconstitute, Kavalier and Clay. Sammy deals with his relationship with Tracy, with fiction, his own insecurities, and narrative instability.

Dear Alex: Mrs. Murry wrote to her husband every night, during 'A Wrinkle in Time.'

Two great Babylon 5 fics this year! First, Gloves, and Other Sheddable Skins. I'm not sure I want to be inside Bester's head, but this story does a very good job of being there. And at the other end of the spectrum, Miracles Here and There. Ivanova-centric, with some lovely Ivanova-Marcus interaction, and the kind of witty humor that Babylon 5 had at its best.

5 Games Jess Played In Bend it Like Beckham. Total fluff! Harry Potter crossover AND Jules/Jess slash, good enough to make me overcome my aversion to the Five Things style.

Another crossover, far more surreal: Strange Geometry. Holmes on Homes, renovating a Cthulhu house. "Holmes' frown only deepened as he peered around the corner of the basement where a depression gurgled sullenly, oily water glistening in the television lights and reflecting a warped door sitting slightly askew just beyond it. "That's some strange geometry there," he muttered." Creative and hilarious!

Many of the Downton Abbey fics had Season 3 spoilers so I avoided them, but this one is set safely during Season 2. I Wear You Like a Leaf Crown. Matthew/Mary, warming my shipper's heart :) But it also has some really beautiful, tragic, and well-drawn character sketches of soldiers staying at the Abbey during the war.

It is now snowing so hard we can't see the hills in the distance, so we're sitting around learning mahjong and having a post-mortem discussion about our cousin who was at his bullying, combative worst yesterday. (We're all about feeling sympathy for him but from a nice safe distance.)

*hug* Those situations are easiest to deal with from a nice safe distance and with a lot of people who have your back. And mahjong and snow and siblings sounds like a recipe for an excellent day!

PS Four inches of snow between 9 AM and 12:30 PM. Crazy!

Still working from lodge with lousy net connection, but my favorite so far, unexpectedly, is a really wonderful Discworld one, with Susan and Vimes: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2012/works/600401
